what is literate mean to me

What do I think being literate means? Personally I think there are so many things today to be literate of the term cannot possibly be limited to reading.

                To me being literate means being able to read and write, just as it did centuries ago. But beyond the reading and writing, the term literate has come to mean literate of technology also.  There is even a high school requirement now to take a computer literacy class. This class enables kids to be able to perform both simple and complicated tasks on the computer using different software.

                I think without the computer literacy class teaches most people would end up lost when they moved onto college or into the work force. Being literate in other technologies is important to, when it comes to moving up in the world. There are so many job opportunities open to people who understand drafting and design technology, and people that can fix computers.

                I think being  literate in the reading sense is of the utmost importance but the skill of being literate in technology is becoming an necessity as well.

Group discussion. what the internet is used for

In our discussion groups regarding what the internet should and shouldn’t be used for, my partners and I all agreed the internet should be used for constructional purposes. we all came to the conclusion that sadly the internet isn’t always used for that purpose so maybe the internet should be governed more strictly than it has been in the past to keep people from abusing this window we have to have the world around us.

 One of the strengths we found our argument to have is that there are many ways other than explicit websites to entertain. With all the new media surrounding us there is no need to have access to those types of sites, so maybe they should just be banned from the internet.

What should the internet be used for? What is it used for?

There are so many great things people are capable  of thanks to new media and all the good things it gives us access to, sadly though, these days the new media we are surrounded by also gives us access to demeaning and vile  things . I think the internet should be used for what it was intended for, informing and educating.

Personally I think the internet is used for, in general, good things. I feel it is there and used by millions and millions of people to inform, educate, and morally entertain. There are so many good things we can get to. For example, one of my personal favorite websites is Wikipedia, which is an online encyclopedia full of everything you could want to know, (easily accessed through this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page ). Another good thing the internet is used for is news updates. Not only can you read your daily local newspaper but a newspaper from New York, or even Japan! Granted you can read Japanese. A person can become so much more educated and informed about the world around them just by a click of the mouse. www.yahoo.com/ is a good provider for me when I want news updates at my fingertips. All I have to do is enter my homepage and away I go.

Like I mentioned earlier the internet can also be used for demeaning and vile things. Because of the internet a new phrase has been invented, it’s called cyber bullying. It occurs more than it should and affects many people, young and old. Along with this new form of bullying there are other things that plague our internet. Like for example the explicit content you can come across by maybe typing in an address wrong, or accidently clicking on an ad. Horribly some people do not come across these sites by accident though. Many people use the internet solely for the purpose of filthy self pleasure. It’s disgusting that people can take such a useful tool and take advantage of it in such a selfish way.

New media in my life

New media affects everybody these days. It is seen everywhere you go, whether it is watching a movie, or listening to your mp3 player, to even talking on the phone.

New media affects my daily life in a great way. A few examples of these technologies are my laptop for instance. I use it for many things whether it is school, or entertainment. New media also allows my teachers to expand their teaching methods to new levels allowing more information to be exposed to the other students and me. Another form of new media I use everyday is online social networks. I use both myspace and facebook to keep in contact with my friends and family and stay updated on their life. I also use my cell phone on a daily basis to keep in contact with my family and let them know I am safe when I am not home, or to call somebody when I need help. This is one of the most useful forms of new media for me because without it I would not be able to contact the people I need to in case of emergencies. Here are some of my new media favorites:

New Media

What is new media? New media is all the technology we have today to entertain and educate us. New media includes computer games, computer animated movies, iPods, computers, internet and even digital photography.

The difference between old media and new media is large, but at the same time very small. They are both used to entertain us but just in different ways, take for example silent Charlie Chaplin films, they were world famous. But they had absolutely no sound. Now a days we use sound in everything we do to entertain us and stimulate us. Examples of new media are the internet and all that we are able to do on it. Like youtube, people can create their own movies and short films. People can do almost anything they can imagine when it comes to the internet.
